"Public Collection of Modern Art" 2016

Choreography, Concept: Alexandra Pirici and Manuel Pelmuş

Performance Artists: Mustafa Karadağ, Buyan Yağmur Memişoğulları and Müge Olacak

    Photo: Mustafa Hazneci

Performed in Salt Galata Istanbul (Ottoman Bank)

“Manuel Pelmuş and Alexandra Pirici’s performative work proposes an overview of modern art by creating a dialogue between the history of discourses and important moments of modernity, via the enactment and combined choreography of three actors: Mustafa Karadağ, Buyan Yağmur Memişoğulları and Müge Olacak.

While the work may be performed in different spaces throughout SALT Galata, as an ongoing action-exhibition, it relies on the same convention as any display of material objects and will be cited as such. It thus reflects on questions of immaterial production and its economy in museum and gallery space, as well as on the very notion of what it means to hold, or — specifically in SALT’s case — to not hold, a permanent material collection that is traditionally seen as the cornerstone of the museum as a legacy-building institution.

Public Collection of Modern Art (2014) is loaned within the scope of SALT’s current exhibition One and the Many as part of the L’Internationale museum confederation’s reciprocal loan agreement from the Van Abbemuseum where it was initially commissioned for the exhibition Confessions of the Imperfect, 1848 – 1989 – Today.

Three Atmospheric Studies (von William Forsythe)

“They look up at something falling from the sky, contort like figures in a Breugel vision of hell, rush across the stage, accompanied only by the sounds of their own breathing, or slaps they make on the floor. It looks abstract like frozen music. Suddenly you realise that they are telling a story, in different versions, wound backwards and forwards, of the moment a rocket fell in a crowded place and a man was taken prisoner.” (Review excerpt by Sarah Crompton, The Daily Telegraph, 2006)

"Your whole life, like a sandglass, will always be reversed and will ever run out again, - a long minute of time will elapse until all those conditions out of which you were evolved return in the wheel of the cosmic process." (F. Nietzsche)

Inspired by the short film 'Tango' by the Polish director Zbigniew Rybszynski, "The Eternal Return" features 15 performers in a small room - where all actions culminate in one moment and take place in an eternal return. The choreography, based on the repetition of short quotidian sequences, juxtaposes itself in the gradual accumulation of performers who, from 1 to 15, add up in this reduced space and form a multitude of unexpected ties as their numbers increase. In each loop, the individual actions combine to form a new ensemble. A complex mechanism unfolds that opens the space for new references and narratives. A kaleidoscope of everyday life, humorous and yet serious, develops on stage, gaining something new through each repetition.
